  • Should the water heater be turned off when your property is vacant?
It is recommended that gas or electric water heaters be turned to their lowest setting while you’re gone. An electric water heater can be turned off at the circuit breaker box and the gas water heater can be turned off at the pilot light and gas supply line closed.
  • Should the water supply to the washing machine be turned off while we are away?
Yes. The washing machine hoses can break, causing flooding. If the water supply in the house is not turned off, it is recommended that the washing machine faucets are turned to the ‘off’ position.
  • At what temperature should the thermostats be set?
During the summer months, the thermostats should be set between 77°F to 80°F. This should prevent mold and humidity provided insulation is adequate.
  • Should rodent deterrent devices be set during our absence?
Yes. Rodent deterrents and traps should be placed inside the home and garage. We check the traps, refresh bait when needed and dispose of dead rodents.
  • Should we unplug appliances?
It is recommended that appliances such as the toaster, countertop microwave, televisions, alarm clocks, etc. be unplugged to prevent damage in case of a power surge. If you prefer to keep your refrigerator off, make sure to clean the interior with a cleaning solution, dry thoroughly and leave doors open.
  • What if a hurricane comes when we are away?
Make arrangements with us for hurricane shutters to be installed prior to your departure if you will be gone for the duration of the hurricane season, which runs June to November. Palm Coast Handyman and Homewatch Services will be available for additional services before and after the storm.
  • Do you provide gutter cleaning?
Yes. Seasonal Florida storms throughout the summer and into the fall occur when our customers are away. We have found this service goes hand in hand with our home watch business.
